international voice over internet protocol providers
A fierce debate is raging at the Federal Communications Commission more than the future of VoIP (voice over Internet protocol) telephone. At first sight, the ferocity of the argue appears out of balance to the reality retail voice over Internet protocol subscribers account for lower than 0.2 % of United States of America telephone lines. All the same, modern research on the international long distance marketplace through TeleGeography, a division of PriMetrica, Inc., suggests that voice over Internet protocol could transform a century old business in just a few years. Due to TeleGeography 2004, voice over Internet protocol providers carried only 150 million minutes of international phone calls in 1998, less than 0.2% percent of the world’s international traffic. Through 2002, cross-border voice over Internet protocol traffic had grown to just under 19 billion minutes, about 11 percentage of the world’s international traffic. “While the Federal Communications Commission argues the future of retail voice over Internet protocol services, millions of consumers already apply voice over Internet protocol to make international calls every day,” stated PriMetrica analyst Stephan Beckert. International voice over Internet protocol carriers have achieved rapid growth by carrying traffic on behalf of other long-distance service suppliers. Consequently, most end-users are likely unaware that a lot of their telephone calls are traversing the Internet, rather than traditional long-distance networks. The two biggest voice over Internet protocol carriers, ITXC and iBasis, each carried over 2.5 billion minutes of international traffic in 2002, basing them among the biggest international operators in the globe. “The combining of aging regulations and fresh technology enabled commence carriers to capture important marketplace share in only a few years,” noted Beckert.
