the disk invention

The disk was the utmost top invention in the 20th century:

The first genuine IBM RAMAC was handed to the first clients through shipping in 1956, and this turned the archive of magnetic recording top over heels! The first noticeable change occurred in inventory control, where the main access of the massive drive saves a great amount of both time and money and certainly plus the effort. Bill Donnelly was one of the basic staff members at IBM who used commercialization of the RAMAC, in addition to this, that he worked also as an IBM main member and consultant starting year 1956 up to 1998.Bill recalled some memories which he shared with the main editor in responsible Mark Ferelli.
How did the RAMAC start working out?
I witnessed the first stored shipping of the RAMAC in San Jose in 1956.I think that they had built nine experimenting test models and led them in several areas around the country… like Zellerbach Hall in San Francisco- as test machines. Actually, I dint take part in the original first step development of the RAMAC, however, take into consideration that I knew the formal techniques of it from the very early start where they were really getting interested in manufacturing and experimenting the machines.
How did the first clients react to the receiving of the RAMAC?
The receiving event was great! Because it popped out that you had to install an incredible amount of information, like five mega bytes plus five million characters. That gives a great opportunity for a company to store track of 50,000 listed items or things alike. And that was really a remarkable step ahead. The most exciting fact about it that we first called it “random access” and then the name was changed into “direct access”. You can get though any bit of any information you want in a plink of an eye. Especially when they used the magnetic tape.. Add to this, if you were searching on magnetic tape, the strange fact is that you would have to search like one third of the capacity of the tape before managing any special piece of information. It was taken some minutes of duration before getting your target done.
Later on, this machine strikes up to facilitate your searching process of information in just a few seconds. And there were 50,100 characters records. So, this gives you the chance to store the record of the listed items, clients, received accounts, and more. And this gave the name of the random access machine, RAMAC. And then the spin-masters controlled it and shifted it to the Random Access Method of Accounting Control, and from here came the abbreviation of RAMAC.
When the development models had already been built, I decided to check out the 305- RAMAC. I noticed that the out coming signals looked very weird! So actually I had a very bad impression about that and said to myself,” I don’t think this thing will ever work.” That was my own opinion and thought. Then I was very upset and worried during the writing process of the instruction manuals for marinating and fixing the machines. Add to this that I gave some of the first classes about it. Later, I studied the merits and the drawbacks of the mentioned machines through my writing period of the maintenance listed menu and also teaching lecturing people how to keep the machine working up and how to deal with any encountered troubles if occurred.
